Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
