Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Team Against Team India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected selection.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
