English Football Updates: Mejbri Suspended for Misconduct; City Boss Says 'Defence Has to Improve'

In the latest top-flight developments, a key midfielder has been issued a substantial ban, a manager has pointed out a defender's errors to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline betterment following an erratic win.

1. Mejbri Issued Four-Match Suspension and Fine

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-match suspension and a financial penalty for improper behaviour in October's match versus Leeds United. The governing body said Mejbri faced an independent regulatory commission after an incident of spitting in the direction of away supporters around the 67-minute point of a 2-0 win by Burnley.

An FA statement said: “An independent disciplinary panel has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during the top-flight match with Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player behaved in breach of the rules of the game or in an improper manner and/or engaging in abusive and unacceptable conduct by spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the panel handing down a four-match ban and a fine following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” The team, now 19th in the table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

2. Maresca Points to Adarabioyo's Errors to Make a Point

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has argued that not having seasoned players is not an issue for his team, pointing out that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop the 28-year-old from having a bad game in a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

Maresca, who oversees the youngest squad in the division, does not feel that mentality played a part in the setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player on the pitch, after he delivered a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.

“People always mention experience when we fail to win,” Maresca said. “When we beat Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning older personnel. I understand that if we don’t win, people are always searching for the reason why, but in my view why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we were not good enough.”

Maresca continued, “Who is the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were not good enough.”

Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'

The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have taken lessons from a recent thriller at Fulham and the game is now forgotten. The team survived for a 5-4 victory during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about an hour played.

Coming after they fought off a Leeds comeback and won 3-2 in their previous game, prompting further doubts regarding whether they are resilient enough to mount a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to learn from both good and bad in the good things and results and think of the next one.”

“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to understand what happened, to not allow the goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham you can see the two sides, right? Therefore, always done plenty of good things. Yet the number of shots on target did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not bad. How many attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So, the average of shots conceded we can see is high. We have to improve.”

4. Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Contracts

The Magpies' recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined from Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson free to prioritise negotiations for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.

“My first three or four days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is significantly more secure than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that we would want to renew Tino’s contract and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be missing Botman against the home game with Burnley on Saturday, and he expected to be out for at least another week.

5. Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton

The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for they play Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban following a sending-off against Liverpool.

“That incident is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am positive it won't be repeated because he himself admitted his mistake. We spoke internally. I am positive the matter is closed and will not happen again.”

He also understands the intense pressure facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he said. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We're battling for our top-flight status. We cannot shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Stand-in Merino

Mikel Merino may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when the club's usual frontmen return from injury. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency number nine due to fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for Arsenal’s opener versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second during a 2-0 victory that maintained {their|
